Varieties
Flame Radermachera is characterized by small leaves measuring up to 2.8 inches (7 cm). The tree is adorned with bright clusters of tubular red flowers that grow both on the branches and directly on the trunk. The flowers exude a rich fragrance reminiscent of jasmine.
Xylocarpa Radermachera naturally grows in the dry climate forests of India. There it reaches up to 33 feet (10 meters) in height and is a true tree with massive green leaves. This Radermachera blooms beautifully. White fragrant funnel-shaped flowers with a yellow throat appear in the bark crevices on the trunk and large branches.
China Doll Plant (Radermachera sinica) grows in the wild as a large shrub with a spreading crown. The lanceolate leaves with serrated edges are colored in an emerald shade. The plant blooms at night, with white fragrant bell-shaped flowers forming clusters. This species is the only one widely cultivated as an indoor houseplant.
Indoor Care for Radermachera (China Doll Plant)
Lighting
The little tree needs plenty of light, but the rays hitting it must be bright, indirect. If the pot is located on a South-facing windowsill, you must protect the China Doll plant from the scorching sun using blinds; otherwise, the leaves will turn yellow and dry out.
It is recommended to place the plant near East- or West-facing windows, as a sunburn can not only spoil the tree’s ornamental qualities but also cause it to die.
However, too little light also leads to yellowing and dropping leaves. The shoots become thin and leggy, and the canopy pales, losing its rich emerald tone. To ensure an adequate light level, you should use additional grow lights or standard daylight LED/fluorescent bulbs. The daylight duration should be 10 to 12 hours a day.
To keep the China Doll’s canopy even and symmetrical, you need to periodically rotate the pot so all sides face the light. This is especially important during the early stages of the plant’s development.
Temperature
During the active growing season, the recommended temperature should be 68-77 °F (20-25 °C). The China Doll can withstand heat and temperature fluctuations, but only under high humidity conditions. In winter, you need to provide a cooler environment for the plant. During this time, the little tree will harden off, build immunity to diseases, and strengthen its root system.
The China Doll needs fresh air and frequent ventilation, but you must avoid drafts, which can cause it to drop its leaves. Therefore, the tree should not be placed near open vents, air conditioners, or drafty balcony doors.
Humidity
The sinica variety thrives in moderate humidity but can also adapt to dry air. To keep the tree comfortable, regularly mist it with room-temperature filtered water, and give it a warm shower on hot days. It is recommended to fill a humidity tray with expanded clay pebbles (LECA), gravel, or sphagnum moss, keeping it consistently moist.
Watering
During the period when the China Doll is actively growing, it should be watered abundantly, using water that has sat out for at least three days. Determine when to water by checking if the top layer of soil has dried out. When colder weather sets in, reduce the watering frequency.
Feeding and Fertilizing
You should fertilize the China Doll twice a month from April through October. Use a universal liquid houseplant fertilizer designed for decorative foliage plants. Apply the fertilizer right after watering to avoid burning the roots. Do not feed the sinica during the winter months.
Soil
The China Doll grows well in standard indoor potting soil; however, it’s best to use a soil mix containing equal parts loam, humus, and peat moss, along with some leaf mold. Adding crushed pine bark or coarse river sand (pre-sterilized) will make the soil well-draining, loose, and rich in nutrients.
Propagation
Place the cuttings immediately into a mix of peat moss and sand (in equal proportions) and maintain an air temperature of at least 77 °F (25 °C), misting them regularly with a spray bottle.
A less popular propagation method is air layering, as it is suited for large, woody bushes. Make a 0.8-1.2 inch (2-3 cm) incision on the stem and pack moist sphagnum moss into the cut. Wrap the incision with plastic wrap, keeping the moss constantly moist. Once roots appear, cut off the top branch and transplant it into a separate pot.
The least common propagation method for the China Doll is by seeds. Because this plant rarely blooms indoors, seeds are very difficult to find for sale. In this method, the seeds are placed in moist soil and the container is covered with glass or plastic wrap. You must ventilate and mist them daily.
If the proper temperature and lighting conditions are met, the seeds will germinate in 10-12 days, and they can be repotted after 15-20 days.

Questions and Answers
The most common pests are spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. You can fight them with insecticides or neem oil spray, which is widely available at US garden centers. Affected leaves and stems should be cut off and discarded.
According to Chinese tradition, the China Doll plant neutralizes negative emotions and helps create a favorable psychological atmosphere both at home and in the workplace — making it a popular choice for home offices.
In winter, keep the plant in a cooler spot at around 59–63 °F (15–17 °C). Avoid placing it near heating vents or radiators, which are common in American homes during winter months.
>For the first three years, repot every spring into a slightly larger pot. After that, repotting every 2–3 years is sufficient. Choose a pot with drainage holes — standard at most US nurseries and garden stores like Home Depot or Lowe's.
Yes. To keep the canopy neat and full, pinch off the top buds on the shoots. This encourages bushier, more compact growth — especially useful if you're growing it as a tabletop plant.
In the wild, Radermachera lives 20–30 years. As a houseplant, with proper care, it typically lives 15–20 years.
Good news for pet owners: the China Doll plant (Radermachera sinica) is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, ingesting large quantities of any plant may still cause mild digestive upset, so it's best to keep it out of reach of curious pets. Always verify with the ASPCA Poison Control Center if you have concerns.
Leaf drop is the most common complaint among US growers. It is usually triggered by drafts from air conditioning, relocation to a new spot, overwatering, or sudden changes in light. Once you find a stable, well-lit location away from AC vents, the plant typically recovers on its own.
It can tolerate lower light conditions for short periods, but low light is a common reason for leggy growth and leaf drop. If your home doesn't get much natural light, supplement with a grow light for 10–12 hours a day to keep the plant healthy and vibrant.
China Doll plants are widely available at major garden centers, nurseries, and home improvement stores like Home Depot, Lowe's, and IKEA, as well as online retailers such as The Sill, Bloomscape, and Amazon. Prices typically range from $10 to $40 depending on size.
